The results of the recent survey conducted by ecoATM Gazelle- the leading marketplace for buying and selling previously-owned electronic devices indicates alarmingly poor electronics recycling rate among Americans. Surprisingly, many Americans are not even aware about the options to purchase pre-owned electronic devices.
The survey on consumption and recycling habits states that nearly 85% of Americans are either unaware or do not care that e-waste makes up the fastest-growing waste stream in the country and the world. It found that only 25% of Americans recycle electronic devices. Also, nearly one-third reported no recycling at all.
Only less than 1 in 10 U.S. consumers were seen interested in buying pre-owned electronic devices such as computers or cell phones. In fact, 67% of U.S. consumers stated that they have never owned a pre-owned cell phone. On the other hand, 48% noted that they were comfortable buying second hand cars. Also 31% and 26% of respondents were found comfortable in buying used clothing and furniture respectively.
The survey urges customers to extend the life of devices currently in circulation, so as to reduce e-waste generation. Alongside, more awareness needs to be done on the easiness and necessity of safe and secure e-waste recycling. In future, buying pre-owned computers and electronics must become new normal, said Yanyan Ji, SVP Marketing and GM, e-Commerce at ecoATM Gazelle.
As per estimates, the world produced over 44 million tons of electronic waste in 2017.
